Presidential Advisor on Sustainable Development, Science and Technology, Navin Chandarpal is suffering from cancer and is now receiving outpatient treatment. He is home with his family in New York, USA.
Head of the Presidential Secretariat Dr. Roger Luncheon yesterday informed at a press conference that the state was footing Chandarpal’s medical bill as is catered for by the constitution given his portfolio.
Luncheon, who is also battling cancer, said that Chandarpal’s condition had “deteriorated” but that his government remains optimistic that he will get well soon.
Chandarpal, who is also an executive of the ruling PPP/C was once Advisor to former President Bharrat Jagdeo on Science and the Environment but was relieved of that post by Jagdeo.
Considered a member of the PPP ‘old guard’ and close to the late PPP leaders, Dr Cheddi and Janet Jagan, Chandarpal was welcomed back to the Office of the President by President Donald Ramotar shortly after he was elected at the November, 2011 general election.
Chandarpal, also a former Minister of Agriculture, polled sixth place on the PPP’s Central Committee with 604 votes at his party’s congress held in August, 2013 at Port Mourant, Berbice. He is relied on for his statistical analyses during general and regional elections.
