(Jamaica Gleaner) Sakima Mullings is the new welterweight champion of Jamaica.
The 31-year-old won the championship belt last night following a dramatic technical knockout victory over Tsetsi ‘Lights Out’ Davis in the Wray & Nephew Contender Series final. The bout took place at the National Indoor Sports Centre in Kingston.
Davis’ corner stopped the 10-round contest in the seventh round.
The end came at two minutes and fifty-nine seconds in the round.
Earlier there was confusion as Guyanese referee Ian Jardine called off the contest in the fourth round after Davis turned his back.
Davis explained that he thought Jardine was giving Mullings a standing eight count.
Mullings appeared to have slipped.
After a brief consultation with Leroy Brown, a member of the Jamaica Boxing Board of Control, Jardine allowed the fight to continue.
Along with the welterweight title, Mullin Guygs received $2 million, while Davis was presented with J$500,000. Donovan ‘Police’ Campbell was adjudged the third place and was presented with J$250,000.
Guyanese Howard Eastman, who was absent, will receive J$200,000 for fourth place.
