Defending Region One champions Santa Rosa Secondary squeaked past North West Secondary 3-2 on penalty kicks after normal time ended 3-3 when the Region One Zone of the Digicel National Secondary Schools Under-18 football tourney continued yesterday.
Orin Charles opened the scoring for North West Secondary as he netted in the 15th minute in the game played at the Moruca ground.
Santa Rosa Secondary levelled the scores four minutes later through a Brandon Phillips effort.
North West Secondary then retook the lead as Steven Gamall found the back of the net through a 63rd minute conversion. It then became 3-1 as North West Secondary’s Odike Headley etched his name on the scorer’s sheet in the 79th minute.
However, Santa Rosa Secondary’s Alonzo Abrahams began the comeback in the 81st minute as he netted through a penalty kick conversion following an infraction inside the box. The comeback was sealed five minutes later as Keith DaSilva scored.
With penalty kicks required to decide to outcome, Santa Rosa Secondary eventually prevailed in the shoot-out to keep their hopes of a successful title defence alive.
Over the Hararuni ground in the Region Four Zone, Friendship Secondary defeated Institute of Business Education (IBE) 2-0. Romario Welcome and Roshan Charles led the winners with goals on either side of half time in the 13th and 56th minutes respectively.
In the Region Three Zone, Stewartville Secondary defeated Vreed-en-Hoop Secondary by a 4-0 margin. Gojauth Norville, Yonnick Baggot, Terry Harvey and Travis Bascom netted for the winners in the 14th, 23rd, 61st and 75th minutes respectively.
