Key matters associated with the management of elections were discussed when Dr. Steve Surujbally, Chairman of the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM), met with Jean Ricot Dormeus, Director of the Office of the Organisation of American States (OAS) in Guyana.
A statement from GECOM said that the meeting took place at GECOM’s Head-quarters when Dormeus paid a courtesy call on Surujbally on Monday at the GECOM Chairman’s Office.
Surujbally, the release said, used the opportunity to update Dormeus on issues associated with GECOM’s state of preparedness for Local Government Elec-tions among other issues currently engaging the attention of the Commission. The government has come under severe pressure to name a date for local government polls and while GECOM said it is prepared some members of the commission have since said there are issues which have to be addressed.
Surujbally and Dormeus also held talks on areas the OAS could provide support for capacity building/institutional strengthening and technology transfer.
The release said that Dormeus assured Surujbally of his commitment to support GECOM in every possible way pertaining to the conduct and validity of elections here.
