Accused of stealing a gold chain, mother of 9, Jocelyn Pickett was placed on her own recognisance when she appeared in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts yesterday.
Pickett initially pleaded guilty to the charge before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry which alleged that between October 5 and 6, 2010, she stole a gold chain worth $90,000 as well as $500 from Bernadette Smart. However, after she explained herself to the magistrate, a not guilty plea was entered.
According to Pickett, Smart, the sister of the man she was in a relationship with, had given her the gold chain five years ago when she gave birth to her son. The housewife said that she lost the chain at some point in time and explained that after the relationship ended with Smart’s brother, the woman began to pester her for the item.
Pickett who is from Crown Street, Sophia has had no previous trouble with the law and will return to court on August 4.
