Team Guyana suffered mixed fortunes, winning six while losing three matches on the opening day of the 2014 Caribbean Junior Squash Championships in Hamilton, Bermuda on Sunday.
Makeda Harding opened Guyana’s winning account in the very first match for the local side, defeating Casey Morris of Bermuda 3-1 in their girl’s u-13 divisional fixture.
However, Guyana would then suffer their first defeat of the day in their second matchup as Anthony Islam lost to Barbadian Khamal Cumberbatch in their u-13 boy’s showdown. Cumberbatch defeated Islam in straight sets 11-4, 11-4 and 11-4.
Continuing in the same division, Shomari Wiltshire defeated Bermuda’s Matthew Elliot in straight sets 11-3, 11-2 and 11-2. Daniel Islam would then make it three wins for Guyana as he defeated Ethan Furbert of Bermuda 11-6, 11-1 and 11-5 in the final matchup of the section.
Guyana would then suffer their second loss of the day as Sarah Lewis was defeated by Bermuda’s Olivia Lindsey 11-7, 11-1 and 11-4 in their girl’s u-15 matchup. Alex Cheeks would then claim Guyana’s fourth win, crushing Sam Morris of Bermuda in their Boy’s u-15 matchup.
Cheeks easily won his match 11-0, 11-3 and 11-0. In the girl’s u-17 division, Taylor Fernandes made light work of Mischa Kluyver of the Cayman Islands 11-4, 11-1 and 11-0. Ben Mekdeci would claim Guyana’s sixth win of the day, crushing Barbadian Zachary Proverbs Harris.
Mekdeci won his u-17 matchup in straight sets 11-4, 11-1 and 11-1. Guyana’s final matchup of the day saw Alec Melville going down to Bermudian Dylan Muldoon. Muldoon won 8-11, 12-10, 12-10 and 12-10.
