Port Kaituma Secondary was crowned Region One champions, edging titleholders Santa Rosa Secondary by a 1-0 score line when the Digicel National Secondary Schools U-18 football tourney continued yesterday at the Kumaka community centre ground.
Rod Jeremy separated the two sides with a 79th minute conversion after pouncing on a loose ball within the area after the Santa Rosa keeper had fumbled possession.
With the win, Port Kaituma received $100,000 towards the financing of any school project, the championship trophy and the opportunity to compete in the national event.
Over at the Beterverwagting (BV) Ground, BV Secondary were crowned East Coast Demerara champions, crushing Annandale Secondary by a 4-0 score line.
Paul Kingston opened the scoring for the home side in a fortuitous manner as his curling left-footed 24-yard free kick from the left side of the field, was inexplicably fumbled into the back of the net in the ninth minute.
It would then become 2-0 in the 33rd minute as Kingston sealed his first half double, lashing home his flat right-footed effort down the middle of the net, after collecting a right-side pass.
Darrel Jones would then add his name to the scorer’s sheet eight minutes later, tapping home his shot down the middle of the goal after pouncing on a loose ball within the centre of the penalty area, following a right- sided cross.
The score line would be completed in the 63rd minute through a Kurt Adams effort. Racing into the left side of the 18-yard area, Adams would place his left-footed strike to the lower right hand corner, following a one-on-one situation with the keeper, after collecting a pass from the centre of the area.
Annandale Secondary should have pulled one back in the 69th minute after being awarded a penalty kick for an infringement inside the area, only for Demetry Grant’s penalty kick attempt to come crashing off the left upright.
With the win, BV Secondary will now face off with East Bank Demerara champions Institute of Professional Education (IPE) for the Region Four zonal crown.
