Colwyn Harding was today placed on $75,000 bail after appearing at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court on a robbery charge.
The allegation against the man is that on July, 9 at Georgetown he robbed Sherry-Ann Hope of a quantity of cash, and five cell phones all totalling $390,000.
The charge further alleges that at the same time; immediately before or after, he used personal violence on Hope.
He pleaded not guilty to the charge of robbery with violence when it was read to him by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine Beharry.
Attorney Nigel Hughes who represented Harding said in his submissions that the defence is in possession of alibi statements which have been handed over to the police, substantiating that his client was elsewhere at the time of the alleged robbery.
Hughes said that Harding maintains his innocence and is eager to vindicate his name.
Counsel was successful in gaining his client’s pre-trial liberty which was granted in the sum of $75,000.
The matter will be called again on August, 4 for statements.
Harding had accused a police constable of ramming a condom-covered baton up his anus and later physically assaulting him last November.
Two police constables accused of assaulting Harding late last year were placed on bail on June 2 after denying the charges.
Devin Singh and Roslyn Tilbury-Douglas appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry charged with assaulting Harding sometime between November 1 and November 13, 2013 at the Timehri Police Station.
Singh was placed on $200,000 bail while Tilbury-Douglas was placed on $100,000 bail.
