Former MFK Trading owner, Mohamed Khan was shot in his stomach last Wednesday in what he said was attempted murder in front of a masjid in La Grange, West Bank Demerara.
The businessman was held up by a lone gunman outside of the masjid at around 10pm while he was talking to a friend.
According to Khan, he had just parked his car to meet a friend in front of the masjid when a man rode up to them and pointed a gun at him. “Is money you come for, well this is what you gonna get!” Khan recalled the man shouting at him before firing shots.
Khan said he thought the man was an ex-policeman since he “sort of” recognized his face. So he said he approached the man cautiously and asked: “Tall man what happen to you?” But the gunman brandished the gun and shouted at him to put his hands over his head, get on his knees and lie face down.
He said he was shot to the right side of his stomach when he tried to escape behind his car. “People started to come out when they heard the shots and the man rode away,” Khan said, adding that he believed the man was sent to kill him because he had returned to Guyana to claim monies owed to him by another businessman who was giving him a hassle to pay off.
He stated that he was taken to the West Demerara Regional Hospital and several policemen visited him and took statements. He said he told the police that he was robbed because he was fearful that the man would come again and kill him.
However, he said, he was advised to come clean to the police and report the entire incident. “I think someone was sent to kill me,” he declared. “But I was scared so I told the police that it looked like a robbery,” he said.
Last Thursday, the police had issued a release stating that a Cornelia Ida man was shot last Wednesday night by a gunman who attempted to rob him in La Grange.
The press release said a Mohamed Khan, 54 year-old, was shot to his side at Independence Street in La Grange. The police said he was confronted by a man armed with a handgun who demanded his valuables.
Police said Khan put up a fight and was subsequently shot while the gunman escaped on a motorcycle. Stabroek News had attempted to speak to Khan last Thursday but was unable to contact him.
