Police are on the hunt for a Mahaica-based businessman who opened fire on a party of Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) enforcement officers while they were carrying out an exercise for smuggled goods last evening at Mahaicony.
A senior police official said that so far checks have revealed that the businessman is not the holder of a fire arm licence. Contacted, Head of GRA Khurshid Sattaur confirmed the incident and said that he was in the process of preparing a press release.
No one was injured.
According to the information Stabroek News received, the officers were conducting the exercise at Dundee, Mahaicony around 11pm when the businessman suddenly appeared. A police official said that there was a heated argument between the businessman and the officers. The businessman then opened fire and according to what this newspaper was told the officers returned fire before fleeing the area.
