The Guyana Water Inc (GWI) yesterday said that the New Market and Camp Sts junction will remain closed to traffic for the next 14 days for ongoing sewerage works.
GWI said this is to facilitate the completion of the ‘main gate valve chambers’ which form a key component of the rehabilitated sewerage system. The work is being done under the Government of Guyana and Inter-American Development Bank US$ 10 Million Georgetown Sanitation Improvement Programme (GSIP). Programme Manager, GSIP, Orin Browne stated “these chambers were constructed utilizing concrete and as such we must allow the concrete to harden or cure before placing any weight on the chambers”.
Browne emphasized that it was necessary to allow the newly constructed concrete chambers to harden to avoid any damage to the refurbished sewerage system.
He further stated, according to GWI, that the GSIP is progressing on target as all the 24 sewerage pump stations are fully operational. The completion of the main gate valve chambers marks the final stages of the decommissioning of the old sewer mains, the release said.
Browne made the statement during a tour of the GSIP civil works sites by GWI Chief Executive, Shaik Baksh. Baksh, according to the release, stated that the company regretted any inconvenience to commuters but underlined the importance of completing all civil works to satisfactory standards.
The Chief Executive further said that while GWI will repair all roads excavated for the purpose of the GSIP, parts of the roads which were in disrepair prior to the start of the GSIP civil works are not within the purview of the programme.
GWI, the release said, will continue to monitor all works, including road repairs, being conducted by the contractors: S. Jagmohan/Nabi Consortium.
