Over 200 passengers headed to Guyana were forced to return to New York after the Travelspan plane they were on made an emergency landing at the John F. Kennedy Airport on Tuesday morning.
The 767-300 plane was bound for Guyana with 209 passengers but diverted after one of the compressors inside the aircraft failed. According to information received, the plane was experiencing problems even before leaving the JFK Airport for George-town and this had caused a slight delay.
Passengers later boarded the aircraft. But nearly two hours into the flight, the pilots turned the plane around and headed for the New York airport. The decision was made after the compressor failed.
General Manager of Travelspan, Vanita Jagnarain stated that passengers were sent back to their homes until a flight could be arranged. She said some of the passengers who resided in far-out areas were given accommodation while others were given vouchers as part of the airline’s policy. “No one was stranded and we got another flight for them yesterday. They arrived in Guyana last night (Tuesday night),” she said.
Jagnarain said the problem is being resolved and they were happy the pilots made the decision to turn the plane around.
“They did the right thing by turning the plane around. We can’t question their judgments on this because they have a lot of flying hours behind them and Travelspan’s main priority is the safety of our passengers,” she said.
