Guyana got their Boys and Girls team title defence’s off to the perfect start, overcoming Bermuda 3-2 and 4-1 respectively when the team section of the 2014 Caribbean Junior Squash Championships commenced yesterday in Hamilton, Bermuda.
On the male side Shomari Wiltshire got the champs off to the perfect start in their Pool-A matchup as he defeated Taylor Carrick in straight sets in their U-13 fixture. Wiltshire took the early lead as he claimed the opening set 11-5. He would quickly double his lead, winning the second set 11-6.
The match-up would be sealed in the third round as Wiltshire prevailed 11-4. Dylan Pratt would then level the score for the host nation as he defeated Alex Cheeks in their U-15 showdown. Pratt would take the early lead in the match-up as he won the opening round 11-8. Cheeks would battle back in the second set, winning by an 11-8 score. Pratt would then retake the lead as he won the third set 11-3. The back and forth nature would continue in the fourth as Cheeks won 11-6. Pratts however would clinch the match for the home side by winning the fifth set 11-3.
Benjamin Mekdeci would restore Guyana’s advantage as he won the third match-up, defeating Dylan Muldoon 3-1 in their U-17 fixture. Racing to a 1-0 lead compliments of 11-6 opening set win, Mekdeci would suffer a setback as he lost the second set 12-10.
Mekdeci would retake the lead in the third round as he won 11-6. He would then close out the fixture in the fourth round by overcoming Muldoon 13-11. The match-up would then be forced into a fifth fixture as Kion Knights defeated Alec Melville in straight sets in a U-19 match-up.
Leading, following an 11-8 win in the opening round, Knights would then double his lead as he won the second set 11-9. He would then claim the match-up by easily winning the third set 11-5.
With the scores locked at 2-2 going into the final match-up, Guyana would eventually prevail as Nyron Joseph defeated Nazir Smith 3-2 in their U-19 fixture. Joseph would race off to the early lead as he won the opening set 11-6. Smith would level the scores for the home unit as took the second round 11-6.
Joseph would quickly respond in the third set, winning 11-5 to push Guyana ahead. He would then seal the win for Guyana in the fourth set by winning 11-6. On the distaff side, Makeda Harding overcame a 2-0 deficit to defeat Charlotte Toogood 3-2 in their U-13 matchup.
Losing the first two sets 11-7 and 11-6 respectively, Harding would battle back to win the next three rounds 11-6, 11-6 and 11-6 to give Guyana a 1-0 lead. Guyana would suffer a setback in the second match as Rebecca Low lost to Olive Lindsey 5-11, 11-9, 11-4 and 11-2 in their U-15 fixture.
Akeila Wiltshire would then restore Guyana’s lead in the third match as she defeated Emma Keane in their U-19 matchup 11-4, 11-6 and 11-7. Victoria Arjoon would then deal Guyana’s win as she won her U-19 match-up in straight sets 11-6, 11-3 and 11-3.
Taylor Fernandes would then win Guyana’s fifth match, overcoming Tiye Williams 11-2, 11-4, 13-15, 16-14. Guyana will now face off with Trinidad & Tobago in the Boys section at 1.00 pm and in the Girls division at 5.00pm today.
