Defending Georgetown zone champions St. George’s Secondary continued their spirited title defence, defeating Guyana Industrial Training Centre (GITC) 3-1 in their quarterfinal match-up when the Digicel National Secondary Schools U-18 football tourney continued yesterday at the Beterverwagting ground.
Orin Moore broke the deadlock for the North Road unit as he netted in the eighth minute through an Olympic goal. Tasked with taking a right-sided corner kick, Moore would curl his cross beyond everyone within the penalty area and into the back of the net.
Their lead would be doubled in the 18th minute compliments of a well-placed Travis Cotton header into the back of the net, after collecting a perfectly weighted cross from a corner kick within the centre of the penalty area.
The score line would continue to increase as Royston Dublin netted 12 minutes later through a penalty kick conversion following a handball infringement within the 18-yard box. The Woolford Avenue unit would eventually pull one back in the 49th minute as Shane Morris netted through a penalty kick.
Over at the Camp Ayanganna ground on Vlissengen Road, Chase Academy defeated Morgan Learning Institute by a 3-0 margin in the second quarterfinal fixture.
Shamar Barrow opened the scoring for the winners in the 20th minute, lashing his powerful right-footed effort into the right-hand corner of the net, after pouncing on a poor goal kick just outside the centre of the area.
Chase Academy would double their lead 11 minutes later as Daniel Ross netted, placing his flat right-footed effort into the lower right hand corner of the net, after latching onto a through pass within the left side of the penalty box.
The win would then be sealed in the 61st minute through a horrible goalkeeping error as a 28-yard Kareem Knights attempt from the right side of the field, sailed into the back of the net after being poorly judged by the Morgan Institute custodian.
