Leonora Secondary sealed their third consecutive Region Three title, crushing St. Johns Secondary 4-0 in a lopsided finale when the Digicel National Secondary Schools U-18 football tourney continued yesterday at the Den Amstel ground.
Gavin Graham opened the scoring in the second minute, lashing his right- footed effort through the hands of the keeper into the lower left-hand corner of the net, from within the right side of the penalty area.
Their lead would be doubled in the 18th minute as Keon Farley netted through a flat right-footed effort into the lower right-hand corner, after latching onto a cheekily flicked on pass within the centre of the 18-yard box.
It would then become 3-0 in the 33rd minute as Graham completed his double, lobbing his right-footed effort over the on rushing keeper down the middle of the goal, from within the right side of the penalty area.
The win would then be sealed in the 67th minute as Farley grabbed his brace with a simple header down the middle of the goal from inside the centre of the area, after the keeper had inexplicably fumbled a right- sided cross into his path.
With the win, Leonora Secondary received the championship trophy, first place medals and $100,000 towards the building of any school project. They also earned the right to represent the zone in the national event which is slated to commence shortly.
In the Region Six zone at the Skeldon Community Ground, Guysuco Training Centre defeated Tutorial Secondary by a 4-3 margin to seal their berth in the finals. Over at the Beterverwagting ground, East Ruimveldt crushed North Ruimveldt Multilateral by a 3-0 score line in their Georgetown zone fixture.
Shawn Kirton opened the scoring for the Mandela Avenue unit as he netted in the 27th minute. Troy Carrington would then double their lead through a 37th minute effort. Romell Legall would then complete the quarterfinal win as he etched his name on the scorer’s sheet in the 69th minute.
Continuing in the Georgetown zone at the Camp Ayanganna ground, Charlestown Secondary defeated Government Technical Institute (GTI) in their quarterfinal match-up by a 1-0 score line.
