A man accused of embezzling more than $1.5 million from his employer was granted bail when he appeared in the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.
After the Administration of Justice Act was applied, Clive Nero, 32, of South Ruimveldt, pleaded not guilty to the charge before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry. According the charge, between the April 26 and July 6 in Tiger Creek, Cuyuni-Mazaruni, Essequibo, Nero embezzled $1,589,000 from his employer Vickram Singh.
Nero’s Attorney Adrian Thompson informed the court that his client was not currently in police custody, and asserted that Nero voluntarily reported to the police station after there was a “mix up.” He noted that his client had already come to an agreement with Singh to repay the sum of money during the course of a year and posited that should Singh still be in favour of this agreement, it can be brought to fruition.
Nero also pleaded not guilty to a second charge which alleged that on April 13, in Tiger Creek, he assaulted Eric Jordan causing actual bodily harm.
Nero was granted bail in the sum of $250,000 for the charge of embezzlement and placed on his own recognisance for the assault. He is required to report to the Subordinate Officer of ‘F’ Division and will appear in the Bartica Magistrate’s Court on July 24.
