-still in the hunt for titles
Guyana kept their hopes alive of retaining their Boy’s and Girl’s Team titles, overcoming Barbados and Jamaica 3-2 respectively in their semi-final matches when the team section of the 2014 Caribbean Junior Squash Championships continued yesterday in Hamilton, Bermuda.
On the male side, Guyana escaped from a 2-0 deficit after Khamal Cumberbatch defeated Shomari Wiltshire 6-11, 11-6, 13-11 and 11-8 and Josiah Smith defeated Alex Cheeks 11-5, 11-2 and 11-3 to edge Barbados.
Benjamin Mekdeci started the comeback as he overcame Benjamin Griffith in a marathon five-game thriller 11-6, 8-11, 11-7, 8-11 and 17-15 in their U-17 fixture. Nyron Joseph would then level the scores, defeating Dean Straker 11-4, 12-10 and 11-6 in their U-19 fixture.
The come-from-behind win would then be sealed by Jean-Claude Jeffrey who defeated Stewart St. John 11-3, 11-7 and 12-10 in their U-19 match-up. With the win, Guyana will now battle Jamaica for the top prize after they defeated Trinidad and Tobago 4-1.
On the distaff side, Guyana came from behind twice to seal their berth in the finale. Falling behind after Mia Mahfood defeated Makeda Harding 2-11, 9-11, 11-7, 11-5 and 11-2, Guyana would level the score as Rebecca Low defeated Sarah Conway 11-5, 11-4, 8-11, 13-11.
Jamaica would then retake the lead as Alyssa Mullings defeated Taylor Fernandes 11-9, 11-2 and 11-8 in their U-17 matchup. However Guyana would once again level the score line as Victoria Arjoon made light work of Ashley Lynch 11-4, 11-6 and 11-3 in their U-19 fixture.
The defending champs would then seal the win as Akeila Wiltshire defeated Mary Jo Mahfood in their u-19 showdown 11-7, 11-5, 7-11, 8-11 and 11-3.
