Berbice won 2014 Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) Women’s Inter-county competition yesterday, dethroning Demerara via the Duckworth Lewis calculation at the Everest Cricket Club, Carifesta Avenue.
West Indies player Shamaine Campbell’s composed knock of 67 guided Berbice to 168-9 in their allotted 26 overs. In reply, Demerara reached 79-7 in 21 overs before the match officials called off the game due to bad light.
To win, Demerara would have needed to be over the par score which was 145, but were way off target when play ended.
Earlier when play finally started after a delay due to rain, Berbice were sent in to bat by Demerara and batted aggressively. Campbell who struck four fours and two sixes was supported by fellow West Indies player Tremaine Smart who played a responsible innings of 36. The pair built their team’s score by adding 87 runs in a fourth-wicket partnership. Campbell brought up her 50 off 49 deliveries.
The partnership was broken with the score on 133 in the 16th over, and the Demerara bowlers made constant inroads to restrict the batters from the Ancient County. Bowling for Demerara, Leana Harris led the way with 3-23 while Joann Vansertima and Akaze Thompson collected two wickets each.
Demerara got off to a slow start with just 37 in 11.5 overs. Openers Latoya Smith (19) and Odessa Oneil (16) struggled against the accurate Berbice bowlers. Only Lashana Toussaint (10) of the remaining batters reached double figures.
Natasha Gangoo and Steffi Rodney were the chief bowlers for Berbice, picking up two wickets each.
