Guyana retained their Boys and Girls team titles, defeating Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago 3-2 respectively in their corresponding finals, when the team section of the 2014 Caribbean Junior Squash Championships concluded yesterday in Hamilton, Bermuda.
In the male section, Shomari Wiltshire crushed Sebastian Levy in their U-13 matchup 11-0, 11-0 and 11-1 to give the defending champs the early lead. Jamaica then levelled the scores in the second fixture as Jonathan Walker defeated Alex Cheeks 11-5, 11-3 and 11-2.
However, Guyana retook the lead in the third fixture through Benjamin Mekdeci, who won his match 11-3, 11-9 and 11-3. They then clinched the title in the fourth matchup as Nyron Joseph overcame Jake Mahfood 8-11, 3-11, 11-9, 13-11 and 14-12 in their U-19 match.
Jamaica secured a consolation win in the final showdown as Julian Morrison defeated Jean-Claude Jeffrey 11-7, 12-10 and 11-2 in the second U-19 fixture.
In the female section, Guyana exacted revenge for their earlier 3-2 group loss to Trinidad and Tobago to retain their title. Makeda Harding secured the early lead for Guyana, defeating Jinan Al Rawi 11-4, 11-3 and 11-0 in their u-13 fixture.
T&T levelled the score through Alexandria Yearwood who defeated Rebecca Low in their fixture 11-7, 9-11, 11-5 and 11-5. However, Taylor Fernandes pushed Guyana back on top as she defeated Marion Gillezeau 11-9, 11-5 and 11-3.
Similar to their male counterparts, the girls sealed the title in the fourth fixture compliments of a Victoria Arjoon victory over Marie-Claire Barcant by 11-5, 11-2 and 11-7 in their U-19 matchup.
With the championship retained, Guyana suffered a similar loss in their final matchup as Charlotte Knaggs defeated Akeila Wiltshire 11-8, 11-8 and 11-9 in their U-19 showdown.
