Despite being a two-time gold medalist at the CAC Championships, one of Guyana’s most decorated bodybuilders, Devon Davis has consistently been a runner-up to Kerwin Clarke on the local scene.
At the Senior Championships on August 2 however, Davis who placed second to Clarke at both the HRC and the last Mr. Guyana, is looking to come out of Clarke’s shadow and shed the perennial runner up tag. The 2012 Mr. Guyana concedes that the Senior Championships will host the nation’s best musclemen but he is equally confident that he has the package to reign supreme.
One thing is for certain: fans and judges alike cannot miss him when his form casts its shadow on Guyana’s biggest stages.
Stabroek Sports caught up with Davis and spoke with him about the upcoming championships.
Following is the interview.
SS) How are you feeling nine days out from Mr. Guyana?
DD: I feel pumped. I’m working hard and whoever is coming let them bring it I’m here to win again.
SS) What improvements have you made to your physique since competing at the last Mr. Guyana
DD: I gained more muscle mass and maintained by striations with the mass so I will be tough to beat.
I feel that the judges are looking for mass here so I’m coming bigger and harder to achieve Mr. Guyana for the second time.
SS) You are known for your ability to bring a full and shredded muscular development each time you hit the stage. How do you consistently achieve this look?
DD: I train hard, it’s all about training. Diet is also key, you have to be disciplined with diet and training.
When you are disciplined with those two everything else falls into place.
SS) What is it about bodybuilding you love most and what keeps you motivated to compete at your best year after year?
DD: Winning keeps you motivated as well as my love for the sport. Sometime you win and sometimes you lose but that’s sports and I love to compete. I’m a competitive person.
Where do you realistically hope to place at the Mr. Guyana?
First! I know I was robbed last year so I’m coming bigger to win. I want to win. I think it is time to move forward. I am always in the top three at the big shows, but I want the title. This year everything looks good and I’m really excited to get onstage and see, and just to be involved in such a big show.
With a stacked line up of Clarke, Sylvester Andrews, Clint Duke, Tremel King, Godfrey Stoby and Davis, the patrons at the Theatre Guild should be in for a memorable show. (Emmerson Campbell)
