Lewis places Jamaica in driver’s seat with 10-wicket haul

Jamaica skipper Ramaal Lewis’s 10-wicket haul placed his team in the driver’s seat against opponents Barbados yesterday heading into the final day today, of the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) Regional U19 three-day tournament being played at the Everest ground.

The West Indies Under-19 spinner bowled aggressively and was rewarded with figures of 5-75 to accompany his first innings bag of 5-47, while right arm seamer Odean Smith snared an impressive 4-44 to help bowl out the Bajans for 211.

Barbados’ Jafari Toppin played smartly for his top score of 46 which featured five fours and one six. He shared a 52-run, fourth-wicket partnership with Akil Greenidge who struck six crisp fours in his knock of 39. Shamar Springer (23), Matthew Jones (34) and Nicholas Kirton (20) all made starts but failed to carry on. Chasing 202 for a win, Jamaica were 10 for 1 at stumps after losing opener Leroy Lugg for three after he played a delivery from Jones onto to his wicket leaving the pair of Odain McCatty and Romain Francis on 1 and 0 respectively and the Jamaicans trailing by 192.

Chad Williams snared an impressive 7-31

After winning the toss on the first day, Barbados succumbed to a paltry first innings total of 120 courtesy of Lewis’ first 5-wicket haul. Shamar Springer (31) and opener Le-Germon Gaskin (27) were the only two batsmen to offer some resistance.

Jamaica’s first innings also fell apart as they too were bowled out for a below par 130 all out in 60 overs with opener Leroy Lugg top scoring with 42 and Lewis 23. Barbados’ left-arm spinner Chad Williams tore through the batting line snaring 7-31 in the first innings.

Day two say Barbados in their second innings losing three of their top order batsmen in quick succession. Germon (4), Dikembe Wilson (7) and a first ball duck for Lineko Boucher placed the Bajans on the back-foot as the lost their first three wickets for 26-runs inside 12 overs but Greenidge and Toppin took the attack to the Jamaicans after the lunch period, cracking a clusters of boundaries around the ground. The partnership was broken when Greenidge held out to a catch by Oshane Thomas off the bowling of Walker. Toppin, after playing a sensible hand then fell short of a well-deserved half-century when he was out caught off the bowling of the Jamaican skipper in the 32nd over leaving the score at 105 for 5.

After tea Springer was trapped LBW by Smith followed by Williams who was caught and bowled by Lewis. After offering some lower order resistance Jones failed to hold his nerves and became another victim for the Jamaican skipper. The final Bajan wicket fell when Keon Harding (8) was caught at deep long-on by Thomas leaving Neil Persaud stranded yet to come off the mark, as Lewis wrapped up the innings with a spectacular display of spin bowling.

The action continues today at 10:00hrs.
