Region seven champions Waramadong Secondary sealed their berth in the semi-final round, defeating Region three champs Leonora Secondary 4-0 when the national quarterfinal round of Digicel Secondary Schools u-18 football tourney concluded yesterday.
Winning coach, Louie Thomas during an invited comment said:“We performed very well and we made use of our striking lineup. Due to the conditions of the field, that’s why we didn’t score more goals. We could have scored anything like eight goals but due to the sogginess of the field we couldn’t get proper passes together.”
He added:“We will be trying to work on a more defensive game, scoring early goals in the first half so we can relax a bit more. We have to continue to play our game, better passing and possession so we can maintain our score line.”
Contested at the Den Amstel ground, Ashton Ward broke the deadlock in the 39th minute with a volleyed effort that came off the crossbar and settled down the middle of the goal, after collecting a left sided cross within the right side of the penalty area.
Waramadong Secondary would double their lead 13 minutes later in a fortuitous manner as a right footed Myles Albert strike from outside the centre of the penalty area, went inexplicably through the hands of the Leonora custodian and into the net.
It would then become 3-0 in the 65th minute as Reyon Naughton etched his name on the scorer’s sheet, rifling his flat strike into the lower right hand corner of the net, from within the left side of the penalty box. The outcome would then be completed in the 77th minute as Albert netted his double through a penalty kick conversion. Awarded the spot kick following a trip inside the left side of the box, Albert would calmly place his effort into the lower right hand corner to seal the win.
With the win, Waramadong Secondary will now battle Region four champions Beterverwagting (BV) Secondary in the semi-final round after the East Coast side upset Georgetown champions St. Georges Secondary by a 1-0 margin at the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) ground.
Paul Kingston secured the win for the BV Secondary as he found the back of the net compliments of a 69th minute strike.
