No music and dance licence was issued for Essequibo bar

Dear Editor,

To follow up on my letter, ‘Depravity is being imported’ (SN, July 23), I do wish to confirm that the uncensored private party billed for Saturday, July 26 at the Celebs Sports Bar was never approved by the Anna Regina Police Station.

According to a senior officer of G Division no application for a music and dance licence for this event was received or approved by his office.

The organizer and management of the bar have therefore disregarded legal process in advertising and potentially hosting an illicit and tawdry affair. As a society, we are often complicit in such dissolution and illegality as evidenced by our indifference to smuggling and the illegal peddling of wares. If no police action is taken against this promoter and the organizers of this event, we would yet again announce the absence of the rule of law in this country. The senior officer’s rectitude leaves me optimistic about a just outcome.

Whether this event is an expression of stupidity or a malevolent manoeuvre to have the licence of my bar revoked has no influence on my resolve. I simply have no tolerance for any cheap attempt at entrepreneurship on my property. The sports bar is not a bawdy house, and never will become the site for unvarnished prostitution and obscenity. The organizers of this event should be mindful of the legal repercussions awaiting them.

Finally, the craftiness displayed by the promoter and accomplices should awaken the Anna Regina Police Station to the possibility that this event could possibly still occur. I therefore appeal to the Commander of G Division to have his personnel monitor this bar from now until July 31.

Yours faithfully,
Romain Khan
