Probation report ordered for dad who threatened son with knife

A father who pleaded guilty yesterday to threatening his son with a knife, was placed on $15,000 bail, pending a probation report.

Sylvan Niles, 52, of Lot QQ Lamaha Springs, accepted that on July 24, at his residence, he used threatening behaviour towards his 20-year-old son, Tyron Glasgow, when the charge was read by Magistrate Geeta Chandan-Edmond at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.

It was the police’s case that on the day in question, Niles had an argument with Glasgow, whom he wanted to leave the house. However, Prosecutor Jomo Nichols said, after Glasgow refused to leave, Niles proceeded to the kitchen, armed himself with a knife and placed it in the direction of his son, who ran into a room in the house.

Niles told the court that he was consuming alcohol when the incident occurred. He said that he first had an argument with his wife, then their son got involved and an argument ensued between them. Niles begged the court for leniency.

Subsequently Magistrate Chandan-Edmond granted the defendant bail and adjourned the matter until July 30, when the probation report is expected.
