Pepsi Sonics defeated Eagles 45-29 when the Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association (GABA) eight team Trifecta Knockout third division tourney commenced on Saturday at the Burnham Basketball Court.
Kerwin Jackson led all scorers for the Mandela Avenue unit with 11 points while Drexel Amsterdam and Garfield Bryan contributed the next best scores of eight and seven points respectively.
Kheon Evans was the principal scorer for the youthful Eagles side as he netted six points. He was assisted by Travis Belgrave and Courtenay Taylor who registered five points each.
The opening period saw Eagles taking an early 18-15 lead compliments of Belgrave and Taylor combining to net 10 points. The Mandela Avenue unit shared the scoring responsibility as seven player’s netted in the opening period.
Pepsi Sonics would then battle back in the second half, outscoring their young adversaries 30-11. Ball movement and interior penetration highlighted their offence as seven different players once again registered points on the stats sheet.
Jackson led the offence as he registered eight points in the half compliments of easy layups to the basket. Amsterdam and Bryan also got into the act as they both netted six points in the period by utilizing their superior height and constantly attacking the paint.
Evans shouldered the scoring burden for the Eagles in the second period as he netted four points. The second matchup of the evening saw Plaisance Guardians defeating fellow East Coast of Demerara unit Buxton by a 30-27 margin.
Akeem Johnson was the principal scorer for the Plaisance as he netted 12 points. Contributing to the win with eight and six points respectively were Colyn Nurse and Denzel Nurse.
Netting a game high 13 points in the loss was Denzil Phillip whilst Tomani Emmanuel and Quincy Wright supported with five points each.
Phillips registered a battling seven points by constantly attacking the rim in the opening period to give Buxton an early 13-11 lead. Johnson led the scoring for Plaisance, netting six points in the period through layups.
Plaisance then fought back in the second half by outscoring Buxton by a 19-12 score to clinch the win. C. Nurse led all scorers in the period as he netted seven points inclusive of two layups and a dagger three pointer. He was supported by Johnson who continued the scoring cause for his side as he netted six more points in the period. D. Nurse also scored six points in the period through free throws and layups.
Buxton’s offence in the second half was once again led by the imposing Phillips who netted six points highlighted by a three pointer, a free throw and a layup.
In the opening matchup, Colts overcame Republic Bank Nets by a 39-34 score line. Amoniki John led the winners with 10 points. He was assisted by the duo of Teon Daquain and Dellon LaRose who scored seven points apiece. Wayne Laskey led the losers with a game high 11 points while Desmond Grey was the next best scorer as he netted eight points.
