A 52-year-old woman accused of stealing a toilet set and a kitchen sink belonging to the Ministry of Housing and Water was yesterday placed on bail in the sum of $40,000 when she appeared before Magistrate Dellon Bess at the Georgetown Magis-trates’ Court.
The charge against Hemwattie Narine is that between July 19 and 22 at Providence she broke and entered a house owned by the Ministry of Housing
and Water and stole a toilet set and a kitchen sink together valuing $80,000.
The 884 Providence Public Road East Bank Demerara resident denied the charge when it was read to her.
In a bail application, the woman’s attorney said that his client suffers from diabetes and high cholesterol and was sleeping in a hammock at the time of the alleged incident.
He said that she is a housewife who has no antecedents and poses no risk of flight.
The prosecution had no objection to bail and Narine was informed by Magistrate Bess that she would be admitted to bail on condition that she lodges her passport with the police and reports to the Station Sergeant of the Providence Police Station on the first Monday of every month until the matter ends.
The magistrate sternly warned the defendant, who said she will comply, that if the conditions are breached, a warrant can be issued for her arrest and she can be imprisoned until the matter is determined.
The case continues on October 7.
