A pork knocker was placed on bail yesterday after denying that he stole over $1M in raw gold, cash and other items during two thefts in the North West District. Kevin Giles, 28, of Matthews Ridge, denied that he, on July 24, stole two ounces and five pennyweight of raw gold, a GBTI ATM card, two Alcatel cellular phones and a quantity of clothing, valued in total at $941,500, from Comfort Inn Hotel, Restaurant and Bar, at Matthews Ridge, North West District.
The stolen items were the property of the property of Sherlock Harper.
In addition, Giles further denied that on the same date he stole an Apple iPhone, valued at $156,000 and a $9,000 purse from another person at the hotel.
Attorney Paul Fung-A-Fat, who represented the accused when the case was called at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts, made a bail application, with the condition that his client report to Detective Garraway at 8am every Friday at the Matthews Ridge Police Station.
Although Police Prosecutor Michael Grant made no objections to bail, he did ask the court to take into account the value of the stolen items.
Subsequently, Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry granted Giles $250,000 bail on the first charge and $100,000 bail on the second charge and ordered him to report to the Matthews Ridge Police Station.
The matter was adjourned and transferred to the Matthews Ridge Magistrate’s Court, where it will be called again on August 4.
