A man who cursed his neighbour yesterday incurred a $20,000 fine.
Rajpaul Singh, 36, accepted that on July 22, at Supply, East Bank Demerara, he used abusive language to Stan Bennett.
The prosecution said Bennett is a member of his neighbourhood’s Community Policing Group and that Singh would constantly hurl verbal abuses at him.
The court heard that on the day in question, Singh began cursing Bennett and said that he would get guns and shoot up at his business premises. “I did cuss him, but not all the other things he saying I said,” Singh, however, said.
Magistrate Dellon Bess, who presided over the matter at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts, imposed a $20,000 fine on Singh to be paid to the state.
In handing down its decision, the court took into account the fact that the defendant had pleaded guilty at the first given opportunity, saving the court considerable time in otherwise having to conduct a trial.
Additionally, he was placed on a one-year peace bond, breach of which will result in imprisonment for six months.
Singh indicated to the court that he had only $12,000. As a result, Magistrate Bess has given him up to 3pm today to pay the balance, failing which he will be imprisoned for one month.
