A man accused of cuffing his friend about the body after a misunderstanding over “name-calling” yesterday paid over compensation of $100,000 after they both agreed to settle the matter.
The charge against Eon Gilkes is that on July 26, at Georgetown, he unlawfully and maliciously wounded Frank Fraser.
Gilkes, a labourer of Lot 10 A West Ruimveldt, pleaded not guilty to the charge but said that he would pay compensation to Fraser as they had so decided.
Fraser requested $120,000 in compensation.
He however received only $100,000 at yesterday’s hearing while Gilkes was given until September 30 to pay the balance. The matter is due to be called again on that date.
The prosecution’s case was that the parties had a misunderstanding over “name calling,” during which Gilkes cuffed Fraser to his head, face and about the body.
The assault was later reported to the police and Fraser was sent to the Georgetown Hospital, where he obtained a medical certificate and Gilkes was subsequently arrested and charged.
