A computer technician yesterday found himself before a city court after being accused of converting a laptop charger belonging to his customer to his own use.
Shawn Singh, 38, who said he misplaced the charger, was yesterday given until next Wednesday to compensate and return a new charger to the virtual complainant Troy Braithwaite after both men reached an understanding.
The allegation against Singh, of Lot 3 D’Urban Street, Wortmanville, is that between May and July 22, at Georgetown, being solely entrusted by Braithwaite with a Toshiba laptop charger, valued $10,324, to effect repairs and return same, he fraudulently converted it to his own use.
Singh pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read to him by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry, before whom he appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
He maintained that the charger got misplaced somewhere in his office.
Singh, however, said that he was willing to give back another charger to the complainant from the many he has in his office.
Braithwaite, however, firmly objected, saying that his laptop has to have the specific type of charger made for it and that other models will not charge the device.
He further went on to say that the type of laptop he has is not sold in Guyana and neither are the chargers and as a result one would have to be ordered from overseas.
Singh, however, said that Braithwaite does not know what he is talking about and contended that he has chargers which can facilitate charging the laptop.
Magistrate Sewnarine-Beharry explained to the parties that she is not au fait with what charger would be best suited and would not speculate.
As a result, she informed the men that their case will go to trial.
The matter was subsequently transferred to Court Ten before Magis-trate Geeta Chandan-Edmond to be assigned a trial date.
But once before the magistrate, the parties said that they had agreed to settle.
Singh said that he will place the online order for a new charger and compensate Braithwaite. He was subsequently given until August 6 to do so.
