GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CMC – Shamar Springer hit an unbeaten century to lead a strong Barbados reply against Leeward Islands, on the second day of their third round match in the Regional Under-19 Championship here yesterday.
The all-rounder finished the day at Enmore on 118 not out as Barbados, responding to the Leewards’ challenging 292, reached 254 for six – 38 runs adrift of first innings lead.
Springer has so far stroked 13 fours in an innings that has consumed 166 balls and lasted just over three hours. He was well supported by Akil Greenidge who chipped in with 59.
The pair rescued Barbados from a precarious position of 52 for four, adding 124 for the fifth wicket to revive the innings.
Even when Barbados lost two quick wickets to slip to 196, Springer found a steady ally in Matthew Jones, who was unbeaten 19, as they added a further 58 in an unbroken seventh wicket stand.
Seamer Asharn Hodge has been the leading bowler with two for 44.
Earlier, the Leewards were dismissed for 292 after resuming the day on 240 for six with Jaeel Clarke, unbeaten on 27 at the start, converting his innings into a well-played 54.
Left-arm spinner Chad Williams proved the best bowler with four for 52 while fellow spinner Jonathan Drakes snared three for 93.
