Dear Editor,
The world will soon get a glimpse of the life of Sir Shridath ‘Sonny’ Ramphal, the former Attorney General and Foreign Minister of Guyana who served as Commonwealth Secretary General for 15 years when his book Glimpse of a Global Life goes on sale as of November 6.
Sir Shridath, one of the most decorated human beings on the planet with 30 awards from many Commonwealth countries was praised by several world leaders for his outstanding work, including the former Secretary General of the United Nations, Kofi Annan; Brian Mulroney, former Prime Minister of Canada; Malcolm Fraser, former Prime Minister of Australia; Lord David Steel, former leader of the Liberal Party; PJ Patterson, former Prime Minister of Jamaica; Ian McDonald, author and poet, and others.
Sir Shridath is the only person who served on all the independent international commissions that grappled with the world’s major issues. His book involved a cast of the world’s leading characters and the central role he played alongside them in issues such as ending apartheid in South Africa, laying the foundations for global concerns about the environment, the reform of global governance and the resolution of conflicts.
The core of the book is concerned with the fifteen years he served as Commonwealth Secretary General, for eleven of which Margaret Thatcher was Britain’s Prime Minister. Sonny Ramphal tells the story of the Commonwealth’s role in ending the Unilateral Declaration of Independence of South Rhodesia by a minority white regime and bringing Zimbabwe to independence.
The book will be officially launched on November 6 at Marlborough House in London. There will also be a launching in Toronto, Canada at Massey College on November 19.
Other book signings are planned throughout the Caribbean.
Yours faithfully,
Oscar Ramjeet
