Suriname tops at IGG swimming

Suriname won the Inter Guiana Games (IGG) Swimming Championships after two days of competition concluded at the National Aquatic Centre on Saturday.

Suriname led its opponents into the final day and maintained that lead to finish as overall champions. They ended with 208 points to French Guiana’s (200) and the locals 146 points.

It was the French team that won the girls’ category with 97 points to Suriname’s 95 and Guyana’s 84 while the Dutch boys

dominated the team competition winning with 113 points to French Guiana’s 103 and the hosts on 62.

Britany van Lange, who recorded her best timings in winning two gold medals in the 200m freestyle (2:21.33) and the 100m freestyle (1:01.36) events, led the Guyanese females while Soroya Simmons (34.59s) in the 50m backstroke event claimed silver behind Suriname’s Anjali Rahan who took gold in 33.71s. Accalia Khan was the bronze medalist (35.03s) while Jamila Sanmoogan took bronze in the 100m breaststroke (1:34.34s).

The girl’s quartet (Sanmoogan, Simmons, Accalia Khan, van Lange) claimed silver in the 50m freestyle relay (1:59.30s) behind winners Suriname (1:58.68s) and French Guiana (2:02.80s).

Omar Adams took the silver in the boys’ 200m freestyle event clocking 2:14.42s. Yael Touw Ngie Tjouw of Suriname won gold in 2:06.59s with French Guiana’s Joris Tarcy taking the bronze (2:15.81).

Hannibal Gaskin, who was outstanding during the IGG July trials copped bronze in the 100m freestyle (57.71s), Christophe Lot (55.26s) of French Guiana won the gold medal with Juan Limburg (57.11s) of Suriname taking the silver.

Suriname boys team of of Rochyl Chan, Touw Ngie, Jordi Chan and Juan Limburg (1:42.39s) won gold in the 50m freestyle relay while Guyana’s Gaskin, Joseph De Nobrega, Omar Adams and Selwyn Miller (1:49.00s) captured bronze as French Guiana’s Jean-Guy Delices, Jean-Marc William, Warren Mayern and Lot (1:44.10s) claimed the silver.

Points were awarded to the top 5 places in the individual events as follows; 1st (7), 2nd (5), 3rd (4), 4th (3), 5th (2). For the relays; 1st (14), 2nd (10), 3rd (8).
