Andre Percival coach of the Guyana senior female team which departed for Dominica yesterday is confident of his team’s chances ahead of the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) Regional Super50 Tournament.
Percival said his team’s chances are high since they placed third in last year’s competition though their preparations were affected by rain. The former West Indies U-19 skipper said his player’s preparations were sufficient and before departing they participated in a six-day camp that was aimed at enhancing their skills.
“Most of the players are all-rounders and that is where our strength lies,” he stated.
The Guyana team will be led by West Indies player June Ogle and includes three other players with West Indies experience including Shemaine Campbell, Subrina Munroe and Tremayne Smart. According to Percival, the team is an experienced unit with wicket keeper/batter Lashuna Toussaint being the lone newcomer.
The composition of the team is good and once the basics are executed Guyana can win, opined the coach.
Guyana is in Group “B” with Jamaica, St. Lucia and St. Vincent and the Grenadines and will open its campaign against defending champions Jamaica on Thursday at Benjamin Park.
President of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB), Drubahadur, who spoke with the players at the Ogle International Airport before they departed, urged them to play to the best of their abilities.
He asked that the team try to match the efforts of the successful regional U-19 and U-15 champions as it will be even more evidence of Guyana’s dominance at the regional level.
The Guyanese women’s team is yet to win a regional title. The team reads June Ogle (captain), Tremayne Smartt (v. captain), Latoya Smith, Melanie Henry, Shemaine Campbelle, Kavita Yadram, Lashuna Toussaint (wkt keeper), Plaffiana Millington, Akaze Thompson, Hasena Mohamed, Subrina Munroe, Katana Mentore, Heema Singh and Erva Giddings. The Coach is Andre Percival and the Manager is Carol Nurse.
