Following a commitment by the Minister of Natural Resources and the Environment, Robert Persaud to improve facilities at the Kaieteur National Park, a contract has been signed for a $41M Staff Living Quarters at Kaieteur Top.
A release from the Ministry of Natural Resources yesterday said that the ministry through the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)signed the construction contract for the Living Quarters with Alvin Chowramootoo Construction Service and Block Making Company following a competitive bidding process.
It said that this is the latest infrastructure project in developing the National Protected Areas System.
Persaud was reported in the release as saying that the Living Quarters is part of an overall development programme which will support the newly established Protected Areas Commission in its activities within Kaieteur National Park. It will house permanent staff such as park wardens and tour guides.
The Guyana Protected Areas System Project Phase II is a Government of Guyana – Government of Germany Project being funded by the German Development Bank (KfW). It started in 2011, and is being implemented by the Ministry of Natural Resources through the EPA. The GFA Consulting Group has been engaged to provide support to the EPA.
The release said that the construction of the Living Quarters has commenced, and is scheduled to be completed within six months. Innovative Engineering Consul-tancy Service (IECS) is supervising the construction works.
