A vacationing US citizen found himself before a city court yesterday accused of threatening to chop his mother.
The allegation against Ryan Mohabir, 20, is that on August 5, at Georgetown, he used threatening language to Kamla Persaud, resulting in a breach of peace.
The man, who denied the charge when he appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts, said that he lives in the United States and was supposed to have returned last Friday. The magistrate, however, informed him that he has to remain in Guyana until the conclusion of the proceedings. Mohabir, who was unrepresented by counsel, gave his address as 41 Robb Street, Bourda, where the alleged threat is said to have been issued. No facts were presented to the court but when asked what the nature of the threatening language was, the court was told by Prosecutor Michael Grant that the defendant told his mother that he would chop her.
The prosecution had no objection to the defendant being granted bail but requested that he lodge his passport. This was ordered and Mohabir was released on his own recognisance. Additionally, he was bonded to keep the peace pending the determination of the matter.
The matter was transferred to Court Ten and will be called again on August 11.
