In sweltering conditions at the National Park yesterday, junior star cyclist, Michael Anthony scorched a star-studded field of rivals and rode away with the top honours in the feature 35-lap event of the NSC sponsored 11-race cycle programme.
Anthony, who stopped the clock in one hour, 19 minutes and 17 seconds, also pocketed two of the eight sprint prizes.
The 17-year-old led Team Coco’s Hamza Eastman and Robin Persaud onto the podium while Team Alanis’ Paul DeNobrega, Roraima Bikers Club (RBC), Marlon ‘Fishy’ Williams and Alanzo Greaves pedaled in fourth, fifth and sixth respectively.
Eastman also carted off two sprint prizes while one apiece went to Persaud, Enzo Matthews,
Stephano Husbands and Warren McKay.
The feature race started off at a fever pitch pace with the starters jostling for lead positions. From the seventh lap however, the top six wheelsmen along with Mario King, separated themselves from the rest of the starters and never relinquished their lead.
The riders rode in tandem to hold off valiant chases of the numerous pelotons until team work was thrown out the window with nine laps to go. At this point, Anthony turned on the jets and went on a solo attack, stretching his lead with every turn of the pedals.
With the rest of the cyclists pedaling without a sense of urgency, Anthony was able to hold on for the win. His fourth of the season.
