The Caribs and Hornets played to a 12-all stalemate while the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) ruggers came from behind to edge the UG Wolves 19-17 when the GRFU 10s league kicked off yesterday at the National Park.
In the hard fought second game of the double header, the soldiers held their nerve to defeat a game UG wolf pack compliments of two tries by national player Avery Corbin, a try by Joseph Rahaman and conversions off the boots of national ruggers Cloyd Prowell and Dwayne Schroeder. National u-19 captain, Godfrey Broomes put the students up five-nil after scoring the first try of the game. After a missed conversion, Corbin knotted the scores at five-apiece. Jamal Angus then breached GDF’s defence and Broomes nailed the conversion to give his side a 12-five advantage.
The militia men kept pressing and Rahaman’s try and Prowell’s conversion enabled them to equalize.
But UG’s Oesi McKenzie would break the deadlock with a try to add five more points to his team’s tally.
However, Corbin soon scored again and Schroeder buried the conversion to seal the come from behind victory.
In the first polarizing game in which a team did not score in a half, a draw was a fitting result for the wrinkled Hornets and Caribs outfits.
National Captain, Ryan Gonsalves try and conversion along with Elwin Chase’s try was all in the Hornets could muster in the first 30-minute half. Theo Henry’s men seem to take the sting out of the Hornets offense to blank them in the second half and escape with a draw. Keon Davids two tries and Henry’s conversion proved critical for the Caribs.
Rugby actions continues on Saturday at the same venue from 15:00hrs. Hornets will face GDF in the first fixture while the Caribs will tackle the Wolves in game two.
