A Region Eight man who was on remand at the Georgetown Prison was found dead in his cell yesterday morning and his fellow inmates blame lax medical personnel at the prison infirmary.
Stabroek News understands that the body of 33-year-old Victor Larry was found in his cell around mid- morning yesterday by prison wardens.
He was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Reports say that the man had complained of feeling unwell for the past two weeks and every time he was taken to the infirmary he was told there was no one there to attend to him. As such, he would return to his cell in excruciating pain where he would remain until another bout of the unbearable pain would send him into fits of screaming and the wardens would take him again to the empty infirmary.
“They always telling the man that no medex aint deh to treat he,” a source told this newspaper.
Neither Head of Prisons, Welton Trotz nor Police Crime Chief Leslie James could be reached for comment.
However, Minister of Home Affairs Clement Rohee, who said that he was in a meeting yesterday when this newspaper called, said that an autopsy would have to be performed on the man before the cause of death is established.
It is not clear when the autopsy would be performed. Stabroek News was told that the man was from a Potaro/Siparuni community. He was on remand for a murder committed in his community.
His body is currently at the Georgetown Public Hospital Mortuary.
