Two men died over the weekend in separate accidents along the East Bank Essequibo public road.
On Saturday evening, Tahl Singh, 73, was struck down along the Orangestein, East Bank Essequibo public road.
‘D’ Division Comman-der Senior Superintendent Ian Amsterdam told Stabroek News that investigations suggest that Singh, of Orangestein, was walking along the road when he was struck down. Amsterdam said that the driver accused of causing the death of Singh claimed that he was blinded by the lights of a minibus proceeding in the opposite direction and had swerved to avoid a collision, after which he felt an impact. Upon checking, the driver saw Singh on the road in an unconscious position, add-ed Amsterdam. Amsterdam did, however, mention the possibility that Singh might have been under the influence of alcohol.
When contacted, Singh’s relatives were tight-lipped about his death.
A relative did say that the family only heard of the accident after the body had been taken to the Ezekiel Thomas Funeral Home. Singh was identified yesterday morning.
Meanwhile, on Sunday at Greenwich Park, at approximately 10:30am, Ernesto Frank, of Zeelugt, East Bank Essequibo, was struck down.
Amsterdam said Frank was in a car with relatives when a female exited the car to use the washroom. He said at some point Frank exited the car and crossed the road to urinate in a nearby bush. Amsterdam said when Frank was going back to the car, he walked into the path of a vehicle and was struck down.
He added that Frank was rushed to the Leonora Cottage Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
All attempts to contact Frank’s relatives proved futile.
Both bodies are awaiting a post-mortem examination and the drivers accused of the two accidents are in police custody assisting with investigations, Amsterdam added.
