Two men are still in police custody assisting with investigations into the murder of 57-year-old Ann Mendonca, who was found dead in her Plaisance home with her hands bound and her mouth duct taped last Friday, Crime Chief Leslie James said.
The men, who are believed to be residents of Plaisance, were detained on Saturday morning, hours after Mendonca was found by her son. Around 9pm, Gregory De Souza had returned home from work to discover his mother sprawled on his bed with her hands bound and her mouth duct taped.
Mendonca stayed at home while her son would go to work during the day. De Souza, who is also a Government Technical Institute (GTI) student, left home around 8am and returned to find their back door ajar.
When she was younger, Mendonca had presented flowers to Queen Elizabeth during her visit to Guyana in 1966.
A source close to the investigation stated that murder may have been the motive, while observing that only two “measly” gold chains were taken. The source said further that it appears that Mendonca was preparing to cook dinner when she was attacked because there was uncooked chicken and diced vegetables in the kitchen.
