An 81-year-old woman was beaten and robbed by two teenagers, who later set her Ann’s Grove home on fire on Tuesday night.
Dorrel Canterbury is now hospitalised at the Georgetown Public Hospital after sustaining injuries to her head. When Stabroek News visited her yesterday, she was too ill to speak. Her face was swollen and she was barely whispering to relatives when they tried to speak with her.
According to her relatives, Canterbury was in her kitchen when two brazen youths jumped through her window and attacked her.
They hit her across the head several times. However, while the teens proceeded to raid her house of all her valuables, she escaped and called out for a neighbour to help her.
By that time, the young men had already set her house on fire and one of them was seen fleeing the burning house.
A police officer, however, saw him and chased after him. He was apprehended and later led the police to his accomplice, who was seeking refuge under a bed in his home. Both of them were taken into police custody.
Canterbury’s house was burnt to the ground.
Canterbury’s nephew, William, stated that the police had yet to charge the teens with the assault and arson. He added that he was appalled by the whole ordeal and was worried about his aunt’s condition.
