Guyana’s Sunil Seth and Richard Chin in the men’s division and Victoria Arjoon, Ashley de Groot and Mary Fung-A-Fat in the women’s draw remained yesterday in contention for individual singles honours at the 22nd senior Caribbean Squash Championships in Barbados.
Seth, the number two seed is in the bottom half of the draw while the defending champion Chris Binnie of Jamaica is in the top half.
In his quarter final against Trinidad’s Colin Ramasra yesterday Chin won in straight games 11-2, 11-5, 11-8. He had defeated Othneil Kevion Bailey 11-7, 11-9, 11-7 in the previous round.
In the semis he faces Cameron Stafford of the Cayman Islands who defeated Guyana’s national champion Alex Arjoon 11-6, 11-8, 4-11, 11-4.
Chin reached the semifinals by defeating Shawn Simpson in straight games 11-5, 11-7, 11-6 but will find it tough to get past the defending four-time champion Binnie who defeated Micah Franklin of Bermuda 11-6, 7-11, 11-3, 5-11, 11-7.
Chin had in the previous round defeated Julian Jervis 12-10, 11-4 11-4.
Guyana is certain of a spot in the women’s final with the number two seed Fung-A-Fat down to play Arjoon.
Fung-A-Fat booked her place in the semis by defeating Nadia McCarthy of Barbados, a former junior Caribbean champion.
Fung-A-Fat won 7-11, 11-1, 11-0, 11-8 while the 18-year-old Arjoon trounced Jamaica’s Brooke Burrowes 12-10, 6-11, 11-9, 15-13.
De Groot, who had defeated Jamaica’s Brooke Burrowes 12-10, 6-11, 11-9, 15-15 in the quarter finals defeated Elidih Bridgeman 11-9, 14-12, and 11-6 and will play Meakins, the favourite in today’s semis.
Meakins had defeated Guyana’s Akelia Wiltshire 11-2, 11-6, 11-3.
