Disciplined bowling from Darien Best and national leg spinner Steven Sankar helped Malteenoes Sports Club (MSC) crush the Guyana Defence Force by 120 runs in the Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA)/ Noble House Seafood’s second division two-day competition yesterday at the Gandhi Youth Organisation (GYO) ground.
Scores in the match: MSC 1st innings 112 all out in 24 overs (Rackeal Greene 33 not out; Randy Lindore, 3-16). MSC 2nd innings 162 all out in 19.5 overs (Kareem Naughton 37 and Greene 29; Ravi Persaud 6-64 and Jeremiah Harris, 3-16).
GDF in their first innings 91-7 in 25 overs (Marcus Watkins 26 and Lindore 23; Best 3-23).
GDF in their second innings 63-7 in 19.2 overs (Sankar 3-7 and Best 2-21)
In a low scoring encounter that saw reckless batting from both sides the Thomas Lands side, MSC came out on top in a rain affected encounter.
MSC batted first and was restricted within an hour and a half after commencing their innings at 3:30 on Saturday afternoon. Greene was the only batsman to show resistance with a determined unbeaten innings.
However, the military side did not live up to a disciplined expectation as their team was short of three players on the final day. With the presence of the entire team the results could have gone in either team’s favour.
It was Best’s accuracy and Sankar’s experience that won the game for the MSC side in the end as the batsmen struggled to score at the small venue and on a docile pitch.
MSC will now have to wait on the results of the other matches to be played to know whether they will make the semi-finals.
