Guyana’s Mary Fung-A-Fat last night lost in straight games to Barbados’ Karen Meakins in the women’s singles final of the 22nd Senior Caribbean Squash Championships in Barbados.
Fung-A-Fat lost 3-11, 7-11, and 6-11 to the reigning 14-times national women’s singles champion of Barbados. It was the eight consecutive finals appearance for Meakins who became the favourite after Guyana’s World number 19 ranked player Nicolette Fernandes withdrew from the tournament.
Meakins reached the final by defeating Guyana’s Ashley De Groot, 11-2, 11-3, 11-3 while in the s second semifinal Fung-A-Fat defeated Victoria Arjoon 11-7, 11-7, 11-6.
The men’s final was won by Jamaica’s Chris Binne who defeated Cameron Stafford of the Cayman Islands 11-9, 11-8, 11-7 in the men’s singles final.
It is the fifth triumph for Binnie at the championships.
Binnie had reached the final by defeating Guyana’s Richard Chin 11-8, 11-9, 14-12 while Stafford got the better of Sunil Seth 10-12, 11-6, 11-9, 11-8.
