A pugnacious half-century from opener Andrew Lyght Jr., steered the Vishal Singh XI to 188 for 5 in their first innings against the Paul Wintz XI on day one of the Demerara Cricket Board Senior 3-day trial match played at the Everest Ground.
The Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) player smoked eight fours and a six in his top score of 54, finding support from fellow opener Shemroy Barrington who played well for his 32. Other contributions came from Deonarine Seegobin (34) and the skipper Singh who was his usual gritty self, managing three fours in his patient 75-ball 24.
National leg-spinner Amir Khan was the most successful bowler for Wintz’s XI, picking up 2-17 on the first day while a wicket each for Mark Hamilton and Ershad Ali were the other wicket-takers.
Batting first, Barrington and Lyght took a ruthless approach, adding 71 for the first wicket before khan struck removing both openers. Kamesh Yadram (05) was caught by Wintz off the bowling of Hamilton.
Seegobin and Singh knuckled down and steadied the ship towards the lunch interval as Wintz and his men operated in a precise manner. Strangely, the lunch interval was stretched out to two hours because food for the players came a bit late due to unforeseen setbacks.
Upon the resumption of play, Singh attempting a cut shot found a faint edge which found the waiting gloves of wicket-keeper Joseph Perry. Seegobin who looked set on a half-century.
Heading into the close of play Antonell Atwell (9) and Daniel Baker (19) batted out the remainder of time, placing their team in a comfortable position to post a defendable total when play resumes at 10:00hrs today.
