A Festival City man accused of stealing goods valued over $80,000 from two Essequibo Coast businesses was on Monday granted bail when he appeared in the Charity Magistrate’s Court.
Sixty-two-year-old Clement Morris, a mason of Festival City, Georgetown, pleaded not guilty to two charges of simple larceny when he appeared in court before Magistrate Sunil Scarce.
The court heard that on August 15, at Suddie, Morris stole 19 brassieres valued $22,800 from a businessman called ‘Nato’.
The court also heard that earlier this month, Morris stole one amplifier valued $20,000; 10 packs of shaving sets valued $13,000 and one CD player valued $25,000, all to the total value of $58,000 from the business place of Kampta Persaud.
According to the police facts, Morris, accompanied by two women were browsing through clothing at the shop, when after some time he and the women disappeared. The sales clerk later discovered that 19 brassieres were missing. The clerk then saw the accused and the two women walking along the Suddie Public Road and approached them but Morris ran off.
Police were summoned, a search was conducted and the accused and the items were found. Police also recovered the items the man had stolen from Persaud. Morris was arrested and charged.
His attorney, Latchmie Dindyal, petitioned the court for reasonable bail to be granted and, after some consideration Magistrate Scarce granted Morris $30,000 bail on the first charge and $40,000 on the latter.
He was also ordered to appear in the Suddie Magistrate’s Court on September 18 for trial.
