Twenty-year-old labourer Inderjeet Sewdan was on Monday charged with the brutal murder of his stepfather.
Sewdan, of Free Yard, Port Mourant, Corentyne, Berbice, was arraigned before Magistrate Rabindranauth Singh at the Whim Magistrate’s Court for the August 13th murder of Deochand Singh.
Sewdan, who was unrepresented, was not required to plead to the charge and was remanded to prison until September 15.
An autopsy performed on Singh’s body by government pathologist Dr. Vivekanand Brijmohan on Saturday, at the New Amsterdam Hospital found that the 48-year-old man died from multiple injuries, including 18 stab wounds.
Fourteen of the wounds were delivered to his neck, while the remainder were about his body and his head.
The accused was arrested after investigators responded promptly to the calls made by neighbours, who had heard Singh’s screams after he had returned home from a wake house in the area.
Investigators believe that the crime was an act of revenge stemming from a family feud.
