Shemroy Skeffers, accused of circulating explicit photographs of an ex-girlfriend on Facebook, was yesterday released on bail after a city court heard that he wanted to compensate the woman for the embarrassment.
Skeffers, 27, of 244 ‘C’ South Road, Bourda, denied the charge when he appeared before Magistrate Fabayo Azore.
The allegation against him is that between April 6 and April 14, at Georgetown, in public view and without lawful justification, he disseminated obscene photos of the woman.
When asked, prosecutor Michael Grant informed the court that the defendant had used Facebook and text messaging platform WhatsApp to circulate the photographs. The man’s attorney, however, argued that the photos were not published to the world at large but rather were sent to the private inbox of another person, who is a friend of the complainant.
According to attorney Leslie Sobers, who entered an appearance to watch the complainant’s interest, Skeffers was remorseful and wanted to compensate the woman for the embarrassment he caused her.
Skeffers’ attorney, however, offered no response to the claims made by Sobers.
Sobers requested that the accused take every step humanly possible to ensure that the photos in question be deleted from every social media platform, electronic device and wherever else he has had the images published to avoid future publication.
Skeffers, however, told the court that the images have already been deleted.
The prosecution had no objection to the accused being granted bail but indicated to the court that further advice will be sought from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
After hearing the case, Magistrate Azore granted Skeffers $50,000 bail and set September 8 as the return date for reports from the DPP and compensation to the complainant.
