Police may be closer to solving two brazen armed robberies in the city, including one on Sherriff Street which resulted in the death of one of the bandits, after they arrested a suspect.
According to a police press release issued yesterday, the suspect is in police custody assisting with investigations. The man has also been identified as a suspect in the armed robbery committed at the Medicare Outlet on Sandy Babb Street.
Stabroek News understands that investigators may have been able to link the man to the two incidents through surveillance footage.
The robbery at the pharmacy was the first to take place.
On June 30, a gunman walked into the Kitty-based drug store and robbed a woman he had been following, of a bag containing $1M. The woman had earlier conducted business at a city bank.
After the gunman snatched the bag, he jumped onto a CG motorbike his accomplice rode and they escaped.
The woman’s husband had told this newspaper that he then trailed the men all the way to D’Urban Street, where the men parked the motorbike inside a shop and switched the number plate to a dealer’s number plate and left in a waiting car PRR 6697.
The motorbike was taken into police custody and a woman who was at the shop during the time the men dropped off the motorbike was detained by police officers.
The police later uplifted the surveillance tapes from the cameras at the drug store.
Then on June 14, Agricola resident Kevin Fields was shot dead while his accomplice managed to escape on a CG motor cycle moments after they robbed a businessman who was making a purchase at Ramchand Auto Sales on Sheriff Street. The businessman had earlier left a city bank and as he was being tended to in the store, Fields walked in and snatched the bag of money that he had. Fields ran but the businessman gave chase, eventually shooting him dead. The businessman according to an eye witness then pursued the motorcycle but was unsuccessful.
The bag with the stolen money along with Fields’ loaded weapon was found near his lifeless money. When he was shot he was attempting to jump onto the motorcycle ridden by his accomplice.
